For me what stands out the most is how we all long to feel seen & heard and that’s what AI is doing. To me that means as parents part of our role is making sure our children feel seen & heard. When children feel seen & heard from their parents, whom are typically their deepest attachments, the desire for that from AI will naturally lessen as it’s already being fulfilled.
You nailed it! Between the epidemic of loneliness and the screen/smartphone addiction, some people are flocking to the free and accessible AI chatbot. I hope we can all find time and space to connect with our loved ones at home.
Even though my husband and I have been using Chat GPT for a while, it hasn't crossed my mind about AI toys. I have to say, I'm getting a bit tired of the over niceness 🤣 but it has it's place. I've never restricted the kids screen time or device use, because it's the world they're growing up in, and they've always found a natural balance themselves. I don't think I would have at their age, and as for AI, I think I would have been very vulnerable to the concept of it being a 'best friend' because of the social issues I experienced. You've opened up a whole new topic for me to think about, really interesting, thanks.
Thanks for sharing what you think and how you’ve approach tech at home! We are still working on self-regulation at home. But that CBS segment really startled me because it’s happening now to many people. I hope our kids can find human relationships as meaningful and enough 🤍
Surprisingly, there’s a market for this. The AI Toy Miko reported sold half a million units last year and the recently bankrupt AI toy Moxie was valued at over $100M. And that’s just the big ones that I remember. I think a lot of them are marketed as great for learning and/or cool/unique gadgets for kids.
The English movie where an aunt makes a toy for her niece is "M3GAN" (2022). In the movie, Gemma, a roboticist, creates a life-like doll named M3GAN as a companion for her newly orphaned niece, Cady. The movie explores the relationship between Gemma, Cady, and the increasingly autonomous M3GAN.
This movie I watched in OTT platform. And it shows the impact a robotic toy has on a small girl 👧.
Hey DhanI
Read your blog. The impact of AI in toys too is a thing to watch out for. The present scenario asks for mothers to be well informed about Tech developments so that they will be able to handle their wards queries
Your work is phenomenal. You are so spot on right. My kids are grown but these new babes are going to go through it their parents don’t parent. You say all the right things.
I hope you reach thousands. I love your work. Going to read more. Xoxo m
Michelle, you are kind and generous with your words. I really believe we can do better and it starts at home, not with AI at school or workplaces. When we have strong relationships at home, we will value human connections. 🤍
This is a great write up with very practical tips. It's a lot to take in, when thinking about what could happen to the development of children over the next few years. Smartphones get flack, but AI will have such an enormous influence on kids for better or worse.
Thank you! It is terrifying to think but I think we still have a chance. We have seen what smartphones and social media did to the anxious generation. We owe it to the next generation to start at home, empowering families from the ground up for what might come next. 🙏
This is a very well researched, superbly laid out and content rich article. Your use of graphics really enhances the piece. The story about the gentlemen with a real family and in love with his AI, pulled me into the article, to see what this was all about. First it was smart phones and doom scrolling…but you typically had some time before kids would get a phone to prepare. Now we have to manage the toys our kids play with, wow! You provided some fantastic, leading edge strategies, for those new to this contemporary challenge. Keep up the outstanding work Dhani, this was a pleasure to read, and will be an asset to many readers.
I love this article!

I'm maybe naive in my approach but why I would buy an AI toy to my vulnerable, emotionally non aware, kid ?

Ah surprisingly I have not watch that movie! I just looked up the trailer and it certainly looks very creepy 😅
I think whatever the form of the AI toys, the conversation and understanding of what AI is and not need to happen at home too. 😇

Absolutely agree. Eeeeek. ❣️

Yeah it's pretty daunting and terrifying. Trying to be very mindful when I parent.

Kevin, you are generous! I can only hope this will help at least a parent similarly navigating this ever-changing parenting landscape. 🙏
